Four Limbed Staff Pose (Chaturanga) Variation with Blocks

Four Limbed Staff Pose or Chaturanga strengthens your arms, wrists and core. It is also a good preparation pose for more challenging arm balancing poses.

This modified posture, using the blocks as support, helps students to align properly in this challenging pose.

Four Limbed Staff Pose with Blocks: How to Do it Step-by-Step

Step 1

Place two blocks lengthwise at the top of your mat, shoulder distance apart. Set your hands behind the blocks and move into a high Plank with your shoulders aligned over your wrists.

Step 2

Tone your core and legs, then shift the shoulders forward to line up over the blocks. Lower down until the fronts of your shoulders are hovering just above the blocks, lowering fully if necessary to rest, then rising again to hover.

Try to do this for a minute or longer to build strength and awareness in this pose.

Step 3

To come out, rise back up into Plank, pressing firmly into the hands and keeping the core strong.
