What Are The Best Pre Workout Supplements for Women?

Pre-Workout supplements can be a great way to increase the intensity and duration of your workouts. Here we will go over what you should look for when buying a pre-workout supplement and offer a few good choices.

Regular workouts are great for the body and mind but let’s be honest, some days it’s harder to get motivated than others. Whether you’ve been working out for years or you just started a few weeks ago, it’s important to get the most out of your workout.

Sustaining energy, endurance, and motivation are essential to a successful workout session, and the right pre workout supplement can help you achieve that success. We’ve reviewed and chosen five of the best pre workout supplements for women that we enjoy.

Top 3 Recommended:

What is a Pre Workout Supplement?

Even if you exercise on a regular basis, you may not know what a pre workout supplement is or have even considered using one.

If you’re like millions of other women who find time to work out, despite a busy schedule, you might have a hard enough time remembering to bring your water bottle let alone a supplement before you head to the gym.

In short, a pre workout supplement is designed to give you help you focus, have better endurance and energy during a workout session.

While pre workout supplements come in the form of a powder or pill, for this review, we will only be discussing and reviewing pre workout powders specifically created for women.

Pre workout supplements may vary from one to the next but often contain common ingredients such as caffeine, creatine, amino acids, vitamin complexes, protein, carbohydrates, and electrolytes.

Who Benefits From Using a Pre Workout Supplement?

For years, pre (and post) workout supplements were usually targeted towards bodybuilders or male athletes who did intensive training. Today, there are numerous brands and types of pre workout supplements on the market, and they aren’t just for athletic men anymore.

Traditionally, men are more likely to lift weights and women may try out a variety of workouts such as yoga, pilates, or even kickboxing. Today, men and women are participating in the same types of exercise, which means that many women may benefit from a pre workout supplement.

If you walk daily and do gentle yoga a few times a week, would a pre workout supplement be necessary or even beneficial? Maybe not, but if you run and do strength training, you might find that a supplement could help you go that extra mile or lift a little bit more than usual.

It’s common to reach a plateau in fitness goals or even struggle to find motivation. If you find yourself facing these challenges week after week, it may not hurt to try out a pre workout supplement. Remember, you don’t need to be a bulky weight lifter to benefit a supplement.

How to Choose a Pre Workout Supplement

If you walk into any gym, nutrition store, or most big box stores, looking for the right pre workout supplement, you might get a little overwhelmed by the results.

So many containers look the same, promise to do the same, and each one is claiming to be “the best.” Pre workout supplements, if you choose the right one for you, can be a worthy investment but you it can’t always (and probably shouldn’t) judge by the price tag alone.

Choosing the best pre workout supplement for women requires knowing what you want from a supplement, reading the label, and understanding how some of the ingredients benefit you.

Taking a Closer Look at Common Ingredients in Pre Workout Supplements

As with every health and fitness product, it’s a good idea to know what you’re putting into your body; pre workout supplements are no different.

While we mentioned briefly that supplement ingredients might vary from one supplement to the next, we take a closer look at some of the most common ones and explain what they do for you and how they can help you before a workout.

Caffeine

Many of us use caffeine (usually as coffee or tea) on a regular basis to give our energy a little boost throughout the day. If you’ve never considered having a little caffeine before a workout, it may be worth a try as it can be beneficial.

Studies suggest that low to moderate doses of caffeine (100-200 mg or 1 to 2 cups of coffee) can improve performance and increase alertness and help maintain focus. Many pre workout supplements for women contain natural caffeine often in the form of green tea or cocoa.

Creatine

Most supplements contain creatine, and many people don’t much about creatine. Our bodies already have creatine, which is a chemical that is also found in red meat and seafood. While creatine is beneficial in many ways, a synthetic version is often added to workout supplements to improve exercise performance or to increase muscle mass.

Protein or Amino Acids

Protein can be beneficial before (and after) any workout as it can help the body become (and remain) leaner. Whey protein is one of the better types of protein to consume before a workout but if you don’t see “protein” on the label, look for BCAAs.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) include leucine, isoleucine, and valine and these essential amino acids make up approximately one-third of muscle protein, which can be beneficial for intensive workouts. BCAAs are added to pre-workout supplements to support metabolism and also help to boost energy.

Beta-alanine

Beta-alanine is another common ingredient added to many pre workout supplements for women as it helps to fight fatigue during a high-intensity workout. A delay in fatigue means that you can extend your workout session and push yourself a little harder.

Vitamin Complexes

Some important vitamins to look for when selecting a pre workout supplement is Vitamin-B complex, and Vitamin C. Vitamin B helps to maintain your body’s metabolism and promotes energy while Vitamin C can help your body handle the stress of exercise. It can also help to prevent coughing and wheezing while you work out.

Does Every Woman Need a Pre Workout Supplement?

As mentioned briefly, not every woman works out the same or even engages in intense exercises. If you’re a runner, take a spinning class, or lift weights you may benefit more from a pre workout supplement than a woman who takes tai chi or water aerobics.

It’s not that one cannot consider a pre workout supplement, but you should choose a product that will enhance, improve, and help you during your workout. If for example, you take yoga, you may not want (or need) the extra caffeine before your class.

Not only is it important to fuel our bodies but also our minds. While many of the pre workout supplements had things we loved, our “best” pick was Red Leaf Pre-Workout Energizer. We loved this supplement because the taste was pleasant and was refreshing (it didn’t have a bad aftertaste like some other supplements).

It contains some essential ingredients like Beta-alanine and BCAAs, and it provided enough energy for a high-level hour long workout. There was no sense of “crashing” or feeling jittery as the caffeine dose was moderate yet effective.

While this formula may not offer enough benefits to a female athlete training intensively, it is suitable for women who like to workout at the gym, weight lift, run, or take a cardio-intensive class like spin.

10 Best Cardio Supplements to Boost Your Endurance, Stamina, and Strength

If you want to push your endurance training to the next level there are several great supplements that can help. Here is a guide to help you decide what you can consume to help with your cardio training.

News flash: cardio supplements are a real thing.

When you hear “supplements,” you probably think about the typical bodybuilding enhancements: creatine, whey protein, pre-workout, etc.

But there are plenty of effective cardio supplements that will help you take your endurance to the next level.

This makes sense when you think about it. After all, endurance athletes make extreme demands on their body: running 50+ miles a week, biking hundreds of miles, swimming endless laps in the pool—it’s a tremendous amount of training volume.

Fortunately, cardio supplements can give you the advantage you need! Here are just a few of the benefits you can enjoy with proper supplementation:

  • Boost your training and performance to break new personal records
  • Increase your mental stamina and strength
  • Strengthen your active muscles so they can work harder and longer
  • Decrease your body’s recovery time

With all that in mind, here’s our list of the top 10 cardio supplements designed to increase stamina and strength.

Don’t worry – they’re all legal and approved for endurance competitions.

Let’s find something you’ll love!

1. Caffeine

Caffeine isn’t just for Red Bull junkies and coffee pot squatters anymore.

Studies have proven caffeine to improve performance, energy, and mental ability.

Many runners drink coffee before training, but you can get your caffeine from other sources too:

  • Caffeine pills
  • Caffeine powder
  • Energy packets
  • 5-Hour Energy shots
  • Pre-workout drinks
  • Energy Chews, blocs, or gels

So whether you’re hitting the trail early in the morning or you need a mid-race pick-me-up, make sure you supplement with some caffeine.

Not sure where to start? Try SmarterVitamins Keto 200mg Caffeine Pills.

2. Creatine

Don’t make the mistake of stereotyping creatine as a supplement reserved for muscle-building meatheads!

Why do lifters use creatine? To improve their strength, power, and recovery.

Aren’t those things you’re looking for, too?

Creatine has been proven to decrease lactate during exercises and can help to improve recovery time during high-intensity interval training—think sprints and hill training.

Improved muscle strength and size will help you push yourself harder, faster, and longer.

Strong legs sure will come in hand during 7,000-feet elevation climbs during ultramarathons! And swimmers need a strong back and core to propel them quickly across the water.

Whatever you do, don’t knock creatine off your supplement list!

While there are lots of brands you could try, we like Optimum Nutrition Micronized Creatine.

3. Electrolytes

“Electrolytes.” It’s a buzzword favorite for marketers and sports enthusiasts alike.

But what the heck are electrolytes!?

Electrolytes are minerals in the body that are essential to maintaining proper functions.

You need electrolytes to avoid muscle cramping, fatigue, dehydration, and other similarly painful problems.

You lose electrolytes through sweat—and you likely sweat a lot during endurance training.

Don’t worry, though: you can restore your electrolyte balance through several cardio supplements:

Keep up your electrolytes to keep performing at your best!

4. Carbohydrates

Endurance challenges deplete glycogen stores in the body.

When your glycogen stores run empty, you “hit the wall.” You’ll feel like you can’t go any further.

Fortunately, carbohydrate supplements can help you replenish glycogen and continue maximum performance throughout your race or workout.

Take note, though: some carbohydrates are easier for your body to digest and convert into ready-to-use energy. These include the following:

  • GU Gels
  • Natural fruits (bananas, berries, oranges)
  • Energy Bars
  • Sports Drinks

These simple carbs will give you the calories you need to keep powering your body forward.

Think of it this way: carbs are like the gas to your car, the heat to your stove, the power to your computer, the hammer to your nails…

You get the point.

Here’s a delicious and nutritious option: CLIF SHOT – Energy Gel – Mocha – (1.2 Ounce Packet, 24 Count)

5. Whey Protein

Whey protein can help boost your cardio performance? No way!

Yes, Whey! (see what we did there?)

Protein is necessary for your body to build, repair, and maintain lean muscle, and whey protein is perfect for rebuilding muscles after strenuous workouts.

Most endurance athletes can get their protein from whole foods like meat, milk, legumes, nuts, grains, and other foods. But whey protein is an accessible, quick source of high-quality protein.

Examples include…

  • Whey protein powders
  • Protein bars
  • Protein shakes

A strong, healthy body will be ready to train and compete at optimal levels. With this in mind, don’t forget your protein! Mix it into a drink for best results.

6. Multivitamins

Multivitamins aren’t just for seniors anymore.

Even if you eat “healthy,” you may struggle to consume the essential vitamins your body needs.

This is especially true for people on strict diets, like vegans or vegetarians, who often can’t get all the minerals and vitamins with whole foods alone.

A simple multivitamin can help fill the nutritional gaps in this diet and “promote overall wellness.”

7. Sodium

Sodium is one of the most important electrolytes and one that many endurance athletes fail to balance.

When it’s warm outside, you sweat a lot. And when you sweat, you lose lots of salt—up to 3,000 mg in a single hour!

Sodium is essential to regulating your body’s fluid levels and helping keep you on your feet.

But no, you don’t need to carry the salt shaker in your pocket. There are some better ways to get salt back in your body. Try any of these options:

  • Sports drinks like Gatorade
  • Saltstick Tabs
  • Salty foods (black olives, pretzels, salted almonds)

8. Beta-Alanine

Beta-what?

Beta-alanine is an amino acid proven to enhance muscular endurance and high-intensity capacity while reducing fatigue.

This cardio supplement offers incredible endurance-boosting benefits.

Wondering where to find beta-alanine? These are all sure-fire options:

9. Pre-Workout

To consistently put your body through endurance challenges, you’ll need to fuel yourself properly.

Luckily, smart supplementing can give you the healthy energy you need to take your training to the next level. Most pre-workout blends contain some mixture of amino acids, creatine, caffeine, beta-alanine, which can help your body power through a tough sweat session.

If you don’t already take a pre-workout you love, consider starting with something like Do Vitamins – PurePump Natural Pre Workout.

10. BCAAs

BCAAs stands for branched-chain amino acids.

When you’re exercising extreme amounts (like running 40-50 miles a week, swimming every day, or biking hundreds of miles), you put enormous stress on your body.

Initially, you lose tons of fat and develop lean muscle, but eventually your muscle mass beings to suffer.

The leaner you become, the more your body will turn to muscle stores for energy. This is why most endurance athletes look so dang skinny!

But that’s where BCAAs come in!

BCAAs help you retain your muscle mass even when you’re in the midst of a caloric deficit. This is especially important when you regularly perform fasted cardio or participate in ultramarathons or marathons.

To prevent your body from converting your muscles into energy, take some BCAAs before you work out!

Not only do BCAAs prevent muscle breakdown, but they can also improve your workout intensity and help you exercise longer and harder.

Running Supplements for Endurance | Do They Work?

Take a look at these science-backed benefits of running supplements for endurance athletes:

  • Caffeine, found in many endurance supplements, has been proven to boost mental alertness, improve mood, and even boost the desire to run hard.
  • BCAAs have been proven to improve physical performance by reducing the fatigue you feel during exercise. Some studies found BCAAs to reduce fatigue by as much as 15%. That could make a huge impact for a long-distance runner!
  • Participants who took BCAAs rated muscle soreness 33% lower than those taking a placebo. In another test, those given BCAAs performed 20% better when given the same strength-training tests 24–48 hours later, suggesting reduced recovery time.
  • Studies show that those who take pre-workout supplements report higher scores for energy and concentration.
  • Whey protein has been proven to reduce inflammation, a common ailment among endurance athletes. Whey protein can also help with fat loss (specifically fat, not weight. An important note for runners looking to lower their body fat, not necessarily their total weight).

There are plenty more reasons, but I think the data speaks for itself. Running supplements for endurance athletes can improve performance!

Should You Take Pre-Workout for Cardio?

Good question!

First, let’s take a look at what pre-workout does.

Pre-workout is designed to boost athletic performance:

  • Pre-workouts helps to increase energy and endurance by stimulating adrenaline release.
  • Some pre-workout supplements improve blood flow, leading to bigger muscle pumps and nutrient delivery.
  • Pre-workouts increase production of ATP, improving your strength and workload.
  • Many pre-workouts contain stimulants, like caffeine and taurine, proven to increase mental alertness and focus.

Looking at this list of benefits, are there any you think would improve your performance?

You bet!

If you’re interested in starting supplementation, we recommend experimenting with pre-workout for cardio in a few training sessions. That will give you an idea of what you like, and you can go from there.

What Does Creatine do? Uses, Benefits, and Side Effects

In the early days creatine was surrounded with negative connotations, simply because not a lot of research had been done. Now there is plenty of studies that show creatine is very safe, and highly effective.

If you’re in the gym and trying to build muscle, chances are you’ve heard about creatine. Opinions on the controversial supplement run the gamut, and it seems like it’s always a hot-button topic.

But what does creatine do?

Don’t let ignorance stop you from taking advantage of a valuable supplement!

Here’s everything you need to know about what creatine does and how you can use it.

What Does Creatine Do?

Creatine is a naturally-produced combination of three different amino acids: glycine, arginine and methionine. Your body already produces minimal amounts of these amino acids, and creatine can be found in high-protein sources of meat.

When your body produces creatine, or you ingest it, the creatine helps to increase your energy stores. More energy allows you to train longer and harder—meaning more strength and more repetitions, resulting in greater overall strength.

Some argue that all creatine does is suck more water into your muscle cells, making your muscles seem bigger. But that’s not entirely accurate. Yes, creatine does hydrate your muscle cells. But when your muscle cells are hydrated, protein synthesis increases, boosting muscle growth.

Your muscles don’t just temporarily look bigger, creatine helps you build muscle faster. That means if you stop taking creatine, your muscles don’t just deflate. You keep the gains you made! But your muscles cells will become less saturated with water, leading to a smaller appearance.

To date, there are no safety issues with taking creatine, but long-term studies have not been conducted.

Creatine Uses

Before creatine can become fully effective in your body, your muscle cells must be saturated with the amino acids. Because of this, most people start taking creatine with a “loading” phase.

A loading phase is simply when you take larger doses of creatine to saturate your muscle cells quicker. Depending on the creatine, your loading dose will be between 15-25 grams. Usually, this phase lasts 5-7 days. Please note, all of these measurements should be adjusted based on your bodyweight. Be sure not to take too much too fast.

Once the loading phase is over, you return to the daily dose of 5 grams. Loading isn’t mandatory, but it can help creatine work faster.

A study conducted by the International Society of Sports Nutrition found “creatine cycling” is not necessary and will give you no added benefits. This you don’t need to cycle creatine to continue experiencing results.

That brings us to the next question: should you take creatine post-workout or pre-workout? Studies have found post workout to be only slightly more effective, but the difference is minuscule. So take creatine whenever is best for you!

Be careful when buying pre-workouts that claim to have creatine. Most only contain 1-2g of creatine, which is far below the recommended serving size.

Creatine Benefits: What you Need to Know

So what does creatine do for you?

Here are a few of the most exciting benefits:

  • Improve maximum power and performance
  • Produces more energy
  • Increases muscle size and strength due to elevated power output
  • Enhances muscle recovery during high-intensity exercise

The Side Effects of Creatine

Some people believe that consistent use of creatine will damage your kidneys, but no research has been cited to validate this claim. Quite the contrary, actually.

Dehydration, injury and muscle cramps are often linked with creatine, but again, no data supports these myths.

Although creatine helps improve muscle recovery time during workouts, there is no indication that creatine supplementation will improve post-workout recovery time.

The opposite is actually more likely! Increased energy levels during high-intensity workouts enable your body to perform at a higher level. When you lift more weight for more repetitions, you’re going to increase the strain on your muscle fibers. This is great for growth, but greater strain will necessitate greater recovery, not less.

A small percentage of supplementers find creatine causes gastrointestinal issues. As a result, companies have refined creatine powder further into what is known as Micronized Creatine. This smaller form of creatine helps the body more readily absorb creatine, decreasing stomach issues.

Creatine does cause initial weight gain. Your muscles pull in and store additional amounts of water, causing you store a couple extra pounds. Additionally, you should start to gain more weight as muscle growth and size increases.

Creatine Tips: How to Incorporate it into Your Training Program

If you want to try taking creatine to see if it will help you with your fitness goals, we highly recommend Micronized Creatine Monohydrate Powder. This is because the monohydrate is the simpliest, purest form of creatine. Also, the micronized power mixes very well in water.

Creatine is most effective for high-intensity training, and you’ll find it within most pre-workout supplements.

Research shows creatine “may enhance exercise performance in sports participants requiring maximal single effort and/or repetitive sprint bouts.” If you want to take it as effectively as possible, here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Take creatine with food. Some individuals experience gastrointestinal issues when they take creatine on an empty stomach. Because creatine timing isn’t important, you should always take creatine with a meal or at least a protein shake. This will help reduce any potential stomach problems.
  • Expect to see weight gain initially. When you start taking creatine, don’t be disappointed if you see your weight start to spike. You’re not gaining fat! Increased water muscle retention is the cause.
  • Start small. Take 3-5 grams of plain creatine monohydrate powder daily.

The Case for Creatine

If you’re skeptical about creatine, you’re not the only one. When taken correctly, though, creatine can increase your energy levels, make it easier to push yourself, and help you build muscle.

Science fully supports creatine! It’s safe to use and as legal as whey protein. Give yourself an advantage and give it a try.

What Are the Best Caffeine-Free Pre-Workout Supplements?

Do you want to try a pre-workout supplement but are sensitive to caffeine? Or maybe you are concerned with ingesting too much caffeine. Below we will go over why a caffeine-free pre-workout might be a good option and some advice on how to choose one.

For most of us, getting into the proper mindset to train isn’t exactly easy. Maybe you’re just rolling out of bed, half asleep, and you need to get in a workout before you head to work. Or, maybe you’re finishing up a busy day, wondering where you’ll find the energy to put in time at the gym.

Enter pre-workout, the tiny miracle that transforms so many of us into superheroes minutes before we hit the gym. Unfortunately, so many of the pre-workout supplements on the market provide us with a short-term solution that can result in long term problems.

It seems like each year; another supplement manufacturer is in the crosshairs of the FDA for including powerful and dangerous ingredients in their pre-workout supplements. Fortunately, there are some options on the market that you can feel confident taking; supplements without caffeine, or other potentially harmful stimulants.

What’s Wrong With Stimulants?

It’s no secret that stimulants like caffeine are among the most popular and powerful ingredients in pre-workout supplements. Unfortunately, this presents issues for many people. Others are unable to tolerate caffeine at all.

Poor Sleep

Many of us, especially those who are particularly sensitive to caffeine find it difficult or impossible to get a good night’s rest after taking pre-workout supplements. This is especially true for those of us who work out in the late afternoon or evening.

This is because many popular pre-workout supplements contain upwards of 300mg of caffeine per dose, which is roughly the equivalent of half a pot of coffee.

Addiction and Withdrawal

In addition to the physical boost that caffeine can provide, there’s also a mental boost associated with caffeine usage as well. With that mental boost comes the potential for addiction. Caffeine addiction can result in some nasty side effects and withdrawal symptoms as well.

They Aren’t For Everyone

While most people have a positive reaction to caffeine, for some of us, that isn’t the case. In some people, caffeine usage causes symptoms ranging from nausea and stomach pain to anxiety, tremors and more.

Potentially Dangerous

If you’re dealing with high blood pressure, you’ll want to steer clear of caffeine and other stimulants. Stimulants like caffeine function through a process known as vasoconstriction, which is a tightening of the blood vessels. This leads to a spike in your blood pressure. If you’re already dealing with high blood pressure, to begin with, this added spike can lead to potentially fatal complications such as heart attack or stroke.

Taking a Break

Even for those of you who enjoy the benefits of caffeine in a pre-workout supplement, it’s always a good idea to take some time off from caffeine periodically.

The reason for doing so is two-fold. First, since caffeine is habit forming, it’s a good idea to take a rest every now and again to break your dependence on the drug. Plus, like almost all drugs and supplements, our bodies build up a tolerance to caffeine over time. This means that over time, you’ll have to take more and more caffeine to experience the benefits you’re used to.

So, taking a break from caffeine has a few benefits you may want to look into, and when you do take a break, you’ll want a stimulant-free alternative that you can fall back on when it comes to a pre-workout supplement.

Caffeine Alternatives

When it comes to a caffeine-free pre-workout, there are many different compounds that make viable substitutes for caffeine. Here are some popular ones you may want to look for.

Creatine

This amino acid is arguably the most well-researched and trusted workout supplement on the market.

Creatine has been proven to increase strength and promote muscle growth while also minimizing the muscle damage that occurs during a workout.

While it seems that creatine is most effective as a post workout supplement, there’s certainly some evidence that supports its use as a pre-workout as well.

Citrulline-Malate

Citrulline is an amino acid which allows the body to increase its nitric oxide (NO) production. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, which widens blood vessels and promotes increased circulation. Studies have shown that citrulline helps to increase concentration while decreasing muscle fatigue.

The addition of malate, which is essentially just malic acid, has been shown to increase energy levels, similarly to what you’d expect from stimulants like caffeine.

Beta-Alanine

This is another helpful amino acid which can help reduce muscle fatigue and muscle soreness. Inside the body, beta-alanine combines with the amino acid histidine. Together, these two amino acids make carnosine.

Carnosine is helpful because it regulates the pH of our blood. As we work out, our bodies produce more acid, which leads to the feeling of muscle fatigue. Carnosine acts as a buffer which inhibits the acid in our bloodstream from causing muscle fatigue, which allows us to work out for a longer period before fatigue can set in.

Betaine

Betaine occurs naturally in certain fruits and vegetables, like beets. While it’s still in its relative infancy as a supplement, some studies have shown that it can help to increase strength and muscle endurance.

  • TOP NITRIC OXIDE PRE WORKOUT. Agmatine sulfate and Betaine Anhydrous dramatically increase nitric oxide production.

This simple and effective pre from Muscle Feast is available in available in both caffeine free and regular varieties, and two different flavors.
Our favorite thing about PUMPED caffeine free is its simplicity. The ingredients are laid out in plain English, and they aren’t hidden behind a proprietary blend. Inside each serving, you’ll find Beta-Alanine, Agmatine, Betaine, L-Taurine, L-Tyrosine, and Higenamine HCL. These ingredients combine to increase nitric oxide as well as overall energy levels during a workout.

If you opt for the flavored version, there’s also some natural and artificial flavors and artificial sweeteners as well.

What We Like:
  • Available in an affordable 250g size so you can try it out without breaking the bank
  • Ingredients and dosages are easy to understand
  • Provides a great pump
What We Dislike:
  • Flavored version includes several artificial flavors and sweeteners

  • CAFFEINE AND SIMULANT FREE ADRENAL SUPPORT - Experience a natural enhancement of energy levels, mood, and mental clarity without taxing your adrenals with stimulants and caffeine.

This pre-workout from Evlution Nutrition manages to include practically every ingredient you’d want in a pre-workout, except for caffeine.
It includes many powerful compounds that boost nitric oxide. Evlution also claims that this pre-workout boosts mood while helping to promote muscle endurance and delay fatigue. Unlike most pres, it’s available in different flavors as well, so you’ll probably be able to find something that suits your taste.

While ENGN includes practically everything you’d need, the doses of each ingredient are hidden behind the old “proprietary blend” which is certainly cause for an eyebrow raise or two. That said, ENGN still manages to perform well as a pre-workout.

What We Like:
  • Available in multiple flavors
  • Includes several different NO boosters, creatine and more
  • Great price
What We Dislike:
  • Consistency seems to vary; sometimes the product can be a bit clumpy
  • The active ingredients doses are hidden behind a proprietary blend

Conclusion

When it comes to any supplement, it’s important to note that each person is different. Therefore, your mileage may vary. That said, each of these five pre workouts provides a compelling option for those looking for a caffeine free alternative to the popular pre-workout supplements on the market.

But, there can only be one winner, and with that in mind, we’ve chosen Genius Pre from The Genius Brand as our favorite. Genius Pre delivers on every level. It provides energy, it provides a significant pump, and with all natural ingredients, you know that you aren’t taking a supplement that’s packed with fillers and artificial flavors. If you’re looking for a powerful caffeine free pre-workout, this may be the most viable option on the market.

What Are The Best Paleo Protein Bars?

If you are trying to stick to the Paleo diet it is important to have healthy and convenient snacks on hand when you get hungry. Read below for advice on how to choose a Paleo approved protein bar along with a few products you can try.

Whether you’re an athlete gearing up for a big workout or you just want a healthy, filling snack to keep in your bag, protein bars are the perfect solution. But when you’re on the Paleo diet, finding them can be a daunting task. Processed ingredients and grains are found in nearly every protein bar! Luckily we found a few you can feel good about eating.

Whey protein, the most commonly used protein supplement, is a major source of controversy in the paleo community. Whey is a protein found in cow’s milk, making it technically a component of dairy. But because the other parts of the milk including the sugars (lactose), casein (another protein) and other components are separated away from the whey, should it really be considered dairy? This is an argument that paleo athletes debate often.

People who are against consuming whey protein while eating paleo also speak against it for its processed quality. Because it is an isolate protein from milk, whey protein obviously goes through major processing to be made. Unlike real, whole food protein sources like beans, nuts, and meat, whey protein is only a part of a food. It often contains added sweeteners and preservatives, too.

When searching for a paleo-friendly protein bar, try looking for ones with a decidedly non-dairy protein source. Many bars use pea, soy, or nut proteins to give you all the power without the dairy. There’s no nutritional benefits you can get from whey protein that you can’t get from other, real food sources. For this reason, those sticking to the paleo diet should probably avoid this protein source unless you are a serious athlete trying to build major muscle fast.

How To Choose A Paleo-Approved Protein Bar

With so many bars to choose from, picking the paleo protein bar that is right for you can be daunting. There are so many flavors, ingredient combinations, and sizes! If you follow our tips below, though, choosing will feel a lot easier. The first element to consider is the amount of protein you want in each bar. Paleo-friendly protein bars usually contain between 4 and 20 grams of protein each. For those who just want bars to eat as an on-the-go healthy snack, a smaller amount of protein is sufficient to tide you over. However, if you’re intending to eat your bars as a post-workout supplement to help you build muscle and keep your body feeling its best, choose a bar with more protein.

Another key factor when choosing the perfect protein bar for you is flavor choices. Do you prefer decadent flavors that taste like healthier versions of your favorite desserts? Or are you more into the fruity, nutty flavor profile? Finding your favorite varieties will take some trial and error but brands with flavor combos you would never have thought of are a good bet. Just be sure to read the labels of chocolate flavored bars extra carefully; they may contain sneaky dairy!

No matter what flavors you prefer, the ingredients list is arguably the most important part of a paleo-approved protein bar. Grains, dairy, added sugars, and preservatives should definitely not be on the ingredients list of the bar you choose. For best results, choose a bar that contains organic ingredients that are non-GMO.

As you surely know, a huge part of the paleo diet is eliminating processed foods. This allows the body to run on whole, real foods that haven’t been modified and don’t contain chemicals to make them shelf stable. It’s how our bodies were meant to be nourished! While many paleo-friendly protein bars stick to this idea, others have the same overly manufactured quality as non-paleo bars. Check to be sure your brand is made fresh. A good indicator is if they require refrigeration and have a super short shelf life, they are probably made with real food!

Why Eat Paleo-Approved Protein Bars?

Ideally, we would always have time for a healthy, home-cooked meal. But with the busy lives we lead today, that’s basically impossible. We can’t always have a juicy steak and a side of veggies at hand! Rushing to work in the morning, long airport layovers, a rumbling stomach near the end of the work day; all of these moments force us to make a food choice. We could take the easier route and grab greasy fast food or sugary treats. On the other hand, we could go for a more nutritious snack. That’s where paleo-friendly protein bars come in!

Fruits and veggies make amazing, healthy snacks, but sometimes they just don’t cut it. If you feel sleepy or super hungry, protein is the way to go. Paleo-friendly protein bars are usually small enough to stash in your glove compartment, bag, or desk drawer and can be eaten anywhere. They’ll give you energy and fill you up without being messy or hard to eat.

Paleo protein bars are also a great solution for athletes. Those who play sports or are really into working out need extra protein to help recover and build muscle. But often protein bars contain dairy, added sugar, grains, weird chemicals, and are processed to death. Paleo-approved bars like the ones listed below allow your body to be its best without upsetting your stomach or breaking your diet!

They contain no added sugar, gluten, dairy, soy, or GMO ingredients so they are great for paleo eaters and food allergy sufferers alike. Due to them being made of dates, these bars have an extremely chewy texture. Unfortunately, they can stick in your teeth and be hard or even uncomfortable to eat. Though it is marketed as tasting like apple pie, the flavors of these bars is also very light so if you don’t enjoy the taste of dates, give these a pass.
What We Like:
  • Many flavors to choose from
  • Very popular so you can find them in most locations
What We Dislike:
  • Not the best taste

What Are The Best Beta-Alanine Supplements?

Recent research has shown Beta-Alanine to be a safe an effective supplement for strength and conditioning training. If you haven't heard of or tried Beta-Alanine it's definitely worth taking a look.

What if we told you that there’s an easily-accessible supplement that’s been proven by major university, peer-reviewed studies performed on actual human beings, to boost explosive muscular strength and power, enhance anaerobic (resistance training) and aerobic (cardiovascular) endurance, increase muscle mass, and allow you to train harder and longer than normal (source).

Have we piqued your interest?

We’re going to take a look at five supplements that all claim to provide users with those benefits, thanks to the power of Beta-alanine.

Meet Beta-alanine

At a fundamental level, Beta-alanine is an amino acid — the raw material that makes muscle tissue. However, Beta-alanine is a bit different than many of the other amino acids that you might be familiar with, or that people in the fitness industry talk about, because it’s considered a “non-essential” amino acid.

To put it in simple terms, it means that it’s not abundantly found in your typical protein sources, like chicken, beef, fish, or even whey protein, and even when you do consume it, it’s not going to be used by the body to synthesize muscle proteins.

So then, why is Beta-alanine relevant, especially to athletes and fitness enthusiasts?

Beta-alanine Makes Carnosine

Instead of thinking of Beta-alanine as a standalone item in a vacuum, think of it as a key ingredient in a recipe. When Beta-alanine is combined with another key amino acid called histidine (an essential amino acid that’s required for tissue growth and repair which can be found in a wide variety of foods), it results in the creation of Carnosine, a very powerful molecule that has a whole host of positive benefits.

Metaphorically speaking, Carnosine is like the security guards hired by nightclubs and nightlife hotspots: it makes sure that nobody acts out of line, and keeps out anybody who shouldn’t be there.

For instance, everyone is familiar with that “burning” feeling in your muscles, when you exercise for an extended period of time. That burning feeling is literally the build-up of lactic acid, whose presence, as we all know, makes it harder and harder to keep going.

Carnosine basically neutralizes the effect of lactic acid in the muscles, while simultaneously increasing the effect of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is basically the fuel source for all cells. In other words: it gets rid of the stuff that makes you feel like your muscles are on fire and/or completely drained, to help you exercise longer and perform better.

But Carnosine has a great deal of importance even outside of just athletic performance. It reduces the rate of formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGE’s), which are basically rogue proteins or fats that bond with the sugars in your body, and then hang around to make a huge mess in your arteries and veins. AGE’s can be a factor in aging and in the development or worsening of many degenerative diseases, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, and Alzheimer’s disease (source).

Going back to our security metaphor: it’s the it gets between two different people who want to get together and cause a ruckus in their present location.

By neutralizing many of the side effects that take place during rigorous exercise, Carnosine effectively helps your muscles work even better, allowing you to work out harder and for a longer duration. And while your body does produce its own supply of carnosine, it’s nowhere near the amount needed for people who are very physically active.

Supplementing with Beta-alanine vs. Carnosine?

Having spent all this time talking about the benefits of Carnosine, and how Beta-alanine simply facilitates the development of Carnosine, you’re likely asking the question: why wouldn’t I just purchase and use a Carnosine supplement in the first place, since that’s what we’re trying to create in the body in the first place?

While that might make sense from a logical perspective, that’s unfortunately not how the body works. If you ingest carnosine directly, your body will simply break it down before it ever reaches your muscles. It’s effectively pointless.

To effectively boost carnosine levels in your body, you have to supplement with beta-alanine.

How To Take Beta-Alanine Supplements

As far as the optimal way to supplement with Beta-alanine, the process is very similar to that of Beta-alanine’s frequent “tag team” partner among athletes and gym buffs: creatine. Initially, you might want to go through a loading phase, constituting about 6 grams spread over two or three doses during the day for the first six days, and then progressing to the maintenance phase, taking in about 3 grams divided into three doses.

Many people find that, like creatine, beta-alanine works best if it’s ingested with post-workout carbohydrates, as the insulin spike created by the carbs directly shuttles the Beta-alanine to the tired cells in need of recovery.

Also, studies have shown that taking Beta-alanine with a meal may be even more effective (source). And if you’re looking for an outside-the-box way to even further enhance the impact of Beta-alanine, try combining it with sodium bicarbonate, aka baking soda. Baking soda also enhances exercise performance by reducing acid in the blood and muscles, which means that it’ll compound the effect of the Carnosine created by Beta-alanine supplementation.

Which Beta-Alanine Product Is the Best?

If you decide you do want to give Beta-alanine supplementation a try, we strongly suggest starting with the product from Micro Ingredients. Between the high-quality organic product, and large volume of the standard product (for a very reasonable price), you’re getting the best bang for your buck.

Beta-alanine is a fantastic supplement for athletes who play sports involving explosive movements, or individuals who regularly perform anaerobic (resistance-based) workouts or high intensity interval training, because of its ability to reduce muscle fatigue and enhance recovery. It’s one of the most consistently effective — and totally legal — performance-enhancing supplements to hit the sports nutrition market in recent memory.

But in the spirit of total honesty: if you’re someone whose workouts are more focused around low-intensity exercises taking place over longer periods of time (think marathon runners and/or triathletes), you may not enjoy quite the same results, because of the way muscles are differently stressed in those types of exercises.

The Best Protein Powders for Lactose Intolerance

If you have an intolerance to lactose you know it can be difficult to find products that won't mess up your stomach. If you want to supplement with protein powders read below for a few good recommendations.

Protein powder is an excellent supplement to use during training. It has been proven to help increase muscle recover time which can result in increased strength and endurance. But what about those who can’t handle dairy? Whey protein, the most common ingredient in protein powder, is a milk isolate and can often irritate lactose intolerant stomachs. Luckily, we’ve done some digging to find alternatives for those who need dairy free protein.

Protein powder is a nutritional staple for many athletes and regular gym rats. From those who actually play a sport to those who are just trying to get in shape, adding extra protein to your diet helps speed up muscle building and recovery so you stay in the gym more consistently.

Consuming enough protein may be difficult for some people. Or, if your training very hard you may need more protein then you can consume in your regular meals. That’s where protein powder comes in! The reason protein powder has become so popular is because it is very easy and convenient to consume.

This supplement is easily mixed into a glass of water or your favorite smoothie recipe.

Most protein powders feature whey or casein proteins, which are isolates of milk. Though it doesn’t bother some people, those who are lactose intolerant often experience tummy troubles from protein powder.

If you want to experience the nutritional benefits of protein supplements without killing your stomach, look for dairy-free powders like the ones reviewed below. They are made with plant-based proteins that digest easily and are leaner, too!

How To Choose A Powder

With so many protein powders to choose from on the market, it can seem like an impossible task to find the one that’s right for you. To make it easier, figure out what factors are important to you. Are you absolutely turned off by the occasional gritty texture? Do you need unique flavor choices? Would you like extra nutrients or pure protein? Follow our guide below and you’ll find the best dairy-free protein for you in no time.

Flavor selection can make or break a brand for some consumers. Most protein powder brands come in chocolate and vanilla varieties, making them perfect for mixing with other ingredients to make a shake or simply dissolving them in water or your milk alternative of choice. If you’re planning to enjoy protein drinks every day, though, you may get bored with the same old flavors. Keep your eye out for brands that come in a wider array of flavors like berry, chai, mocha, or even peanut butter. Having more flavors to choose from could help motivate you to stick to your protein schedule when you are on a training schedule or just want to get healthy.

Another thing to consider when choosing the best protein powder for you is the amount of protein per serving. If you are into major workouts (i.e. training for a race, playing a sport), you want to look for a supplement that has more grams of protein. Those who just use protein powder as a filling snack need less. Dairy-free protein powders usually range between 15 and 20 grams of protein for each serving, so be sure to check the nutrition labels to find the best one for your purposes.

When choosing your protein powder, take a look at the protein source. Many dairy-free protein powders use hemp, brown rice, and pea protein isolate, but be sure to check the ingredients list. Some powders labeled as dairy-free use egg protein, though, so if you are allergic or a vegan, steer clear. Those who are allergic to soy (and men in general) should also beware of plant-based protein supplements that contain the bean. A lot of powders don’t contain soy but check to make sure before you buy.

“Junk” ingredients are also a big problem in protein powders. Artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, and preservatives are often added to make the product shelf-stable and more appealing to the taste buds. If you’re looking for a “cleaner” dairy-free protein powder, make sure the brand you want to buy doesn’t contain these nasties.

Finally, consider what you want to get out of your protein powder. If you are using it purely as a post-workout supplement to recover and build muscle, a plain old protein powder will work perfectly. Looking for more of a meal replacement? Try one that contains other vitamins and minerals too. As you will read in the reviews below, many dairy-free protein powders are made from plant-based superfoods like seeds and greens. These provide a plethora of essential vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber and protein. Protein powders like these are great for times when you need a healthy meal NOW but don’t have time to sit down and eat. Students, busy professionals, and parents can get the nutrition they need from all-in-one supplements, while athletes are better served from pure protein powders.

Remember that the best protein powder for lactose intolerant people in general may not be the best for you. Shop around, try a few different brands, and you should be able to find your perfect protein!

  • 21 grams of organic plant based protein, contains organic pea, brown rice, and chia, 5 grams of organic fiber, 3 grams of net carbs, 0 grams of sugar, 150 calories per serving

A nutritional powerhouse. All ingredients are organic, vegan, kosher, gluten-free, soy-free, and non-GMO, so Orgain is ideal for those with special diets and food allergies. This low-carb powder has no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, so you can feel good about consuming it. Its combination of hemp, chia seed, brown rice, and pea proteins provides a good balanced mixture of ingredients.

The downside to Orgain Organic Protein is that it can have a chalky texture even when mixed and a strange aftertaste due to the Stevia sweetener. Mix with a good smoothie recipe, the taste shouldn’t be a big issue.

No Udder Protein: Dairy Free and Soy Free Protein Powder (Creamy Chocolate)

No Udder Protein: Dairy Free and Soy Free Protein Powder (Creamy Chocolate)
  • NUTRITION YOU CAN TRUST: No Udder was carefully selected by No Udder founder, Steve Muscari, who has with years of experience treating athletes seeking a healthy and effective protein supplement.
  • CLEAN: Heavily scientifically researched and created with no "nasties", no dairy, no gluten, no soy, non-GMO, no fructose.
  • VEGAN: No Udder is a plant-based protein powder, making it also very easy to digest, and great for those with allergies or lactose-intolerance.

This powder uses a simple water extraction process to dehydrate the ingredients, keeping the nutrients as intact as if you ate them fresh. That means your body should be able to absorb the full nutritional benefits without any nasty fillers, GMOs, gluten, soy, dairy, or animal products.

Its combination of pea and rice protein, along with a natural enzyme from plants, ensures No Udder Protein is easy for your body to digest. It is made for slow absorption, which can help provide a more continuous delivery of protein throughout the day or night.

The downside to this powder is that it can have a chalky, gritty texture, so add it to a blender to really mix it into your drink. The flavor is also not very strong so may need some extra sweeteners or flavors added if you want a sweeter tasting protein shake.

Final Thoughts

If you can’t stomach dairy, don’t think protein powders are literally off the table for you. These 5 dairy-free products taste great and give you the nutritional boost you need whether you want to build muscle, recover after exercise, or just pack more nutrients into your diet.

Green Superfood Powder: Overview and Options

Green superfood powders can be an excellent addition to your diet. These powders can offer nutrition that may sometimes be difficult to get from regular food. Below we'll go over some benefits and ingredients to look for along with a few good recommendations.

While there are many supplements on the market today, green superfood powder is arguably the most popular. One reason is due to the sheer number of benefits green superfoods can provide. This blend of vegetables and fruits can be an important supply of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and more.

If you’re looking for a way to boost your health and energy levels, green superfood powders can be a great solution. Our complete guide explains what superfood consists of and what benefits it can provide. We’ve also included mini-reviews for five of the most popular green superfood powders, including our top recommendations.

What are Superfood Supplements?

Green supplements have been popular since the mid-2000s. While the benefits of greens are substantial, some of the initial marketing was a bit out of hand. Green superfood powders aren’t an instant cure-all for every disease or ailment.

Instead, green superfood powders promote long-term health and energy. They’re an easy source of natural benefits. Green powders are packed with vitamins and minerals. They usually also include a variety of antioxidants, probiotics, digestive enzymes and more.

The vast majority of superfood powders consist entirely of natural foods. No artificial ingredients are included. Typically, superfoods will also be 100% organic, vegan and free from GMO’s.

Ingredients will vary by brand. Most powders will start with a base of wheat grass, barley grass, spirulina and chlorella. Beyond algae and grass, the next group of ingredients will include fruits and vegetables. Also included will likely be some combination of mushrooms, roots, leaves, fibers and similar. Probiotic bacteria and digestive enzymes are commonly added as well.

The Benefits of Green Superfood Powders

So, what do all of these ingredients actually do for your body? Benefits can be split into four different categories:

• Antioxidants – Reduces the risk of cancer and cellular damage.
• Probiotics – Bacteria which reduces body inflammation.
• Digestive Enzymes – Improves nutrient absorption. Helps reduce symptoms of IBS and Crohn’s disease.
• Adaptogens – Stress-reducing compounds.

Also, green superfood powder can help boost your energy levels. Perfect for starting the day off right with a boost of natural energy. Also works well as a post-workout recovery drink.
While you could conceivably get all these benefits through fruits, vegetables and vitamins, many people prefer the simple ease of Superfood powders. Daily use can act as a substitute for multivitamins, antioxidant supplements, digestive health supplements, Rhodiola rose, milk thistle and more.

How to Find the Best Green Superfood Powder

Regular use of a superfood powder can have tremendous health benefits. However, when selecting a green Superfood powder, be aware of any brand which makes “too good to be true” claims of its effectiveness.

For instance, your liver removes toxins from your body. Fruits and vegetables can’t actually remove toxins from your body. However, green powders can boost your body’s natural detoxification process. If detoxifying is an important goal, look for milk thistle. But you’ll want to stay away from any powders which make any bold detoxifying promises. (Source)

If strengthening your immune system is important to you, choose a powder which contains the vitamins A, C, E, and B-6. Also look for copper, iron and selenium. All of these micronutrients work to strengthen your overall resistance to disease. (Source)

How are Superfood Powders Used?

The powder is typically mixed into a glass of water. Almost all superfood powders will contain a plastic scoop. Simply drop the scoop into a glass, add water and you’re good-to-go.

You can also add the mixture into a smoothie. The taste will vary based on the strength and flavor of a smoothie. For best results, you’ll want to use a blender.

What About the Taste?

If you’re not used to alkalized ingredients like vegetables and fruits, the superfood drink will probably taste a little weird at first. This is because your taste buds aren’t familiar with the ingredients. You’ll likely find the drink to taste a bit plant-like and earthy.

Over time, your body will adapt. Usually, after about a week or two, the drink will taste much more pleasant.

What Are the Best Paleo Protein Powders?

Paleo approved protein powders can be a great way to get extra protein while sticking to your diet. Below we'll go over what ingredients to look for an what to avoid. We'll also recommend a few great Paleo approved powders.

There is a broad range of Paleo protein powders on the market. Finding the right Paleo protein powder can help you stick with healthy eating while maintaining a busy schedule. The wrong powder could be a source of weakness in your diet, keeping you from your health goals.

This guide will present the benefits of a healthy Paleo protein powder, as well as five of the best powders on the market today.

Who Should Use a Paleo Protein Powder?

The Paleo diet emphasizes whole, not overly processed, foods. However, you might be surprised at the many types of people who rely on protein powders. Powders are perfect for individuals who follow the Paleo diet but are so busy that sticking to it is a challenge. Athletes also look to protein powders for an immediate and readily available protein source.

Powders provide an easy, grab-and-go source of nutrition that can work as a meal replacement, or a snack that will help you make it to the next meal. Powders can be consumed as shakes, bars, or cookies, all of which are easy to take on the road.

Athletes often turn to protein powders to help them recover from serious workouts. Fitness experts often recommend consuming protein within 10 minutes of a challenging workout, and mixing up a protein shake is a convenient way to do so. Packaged powders make it easy for athletes to ensure that they take in the ideal amount of protein for muscle repair.

Those who stick to the Paleo diet agree that whole foods are best. Protein powders don’t give the body all of the fiber or nutrients that less processed, whole foods will deliver. But when you need a meal on-the-run or at the gym, a protein powder might be just right.

What Are The Benefits Of Using A Paleo Protein Powder?

What can Paleo protein powders do for your body and your health? Most importantly for Paleo beginners, they can help you stick to the Paleo routine. For those focused on weight loss, they can contribute to a healthy nutritional plan; when used as a meal replacement they can help you stick to a specific calorie count. They are convenient, require little prep time, and are extremely cost-effective.

Also, some powders come with health benefits besides the supplemental protein. For example, some powders contain probiotics, which have been linked to weight loss. Many powders contain vitamins and minerals that are essential for proper body functioning.

Qualities of A Healthy Protein Powder

So, what makes a good protein powder? The Paleo diet is based around healthy foods that are minimally (or ideally not at all) processed. However, protein powders are, by the nature of the beast, a processed item. This makes it a little bit tricky to identify which powders are healthy and which are not.

One of the first things to look for is ingredient transparency. The best powders do not leave you guessing about any aspect of the product. Ideally, the protein powder has few ingredients, so this step is easy.

Also look for whether the powder contains the right amount of protein per serving, and is made with real food ingredients. The protein should come from eggs, beef, or a mix of fruits and vegetables. I find that the best protein powders also have additional supplements.

Here’s a quick wrap-up:

• Brand has high transparency
• When it comes to the ingredient list, less is more in most cases
• Sourced from paleo-qualified foods
• Made with real food ingredients
• Meets protein needs (approximately 25 grams per serving)

What to Avoid in Your Protein Powders

When choosing a protein powder, it is important to look at the ingredients list so that you make sure that the manufacturer’s idea of “Paleo” matches with your definition. Just because it says Paleo on the front, does not mean that it is!

For example, if you follow a strict Paleo protocol with no dairy than watch out for whey protein. Whey is a protein derived from cow’s milk so that it will conflict with your program.

The strict Paleo dieter will also want to check for the following:

• Sugar or artificial sweeteners (Stevia is okay)
• Artificial ingredients of any kind
• Gluten

In addition to the items that are not strictly Paleo, you’ll also want to watch out for foods that are technically within limits but won’t contribute to a healthy meal. These include a high amount of starch or cholesterol or too much protein. Avoid beef protein that comes from cows given hormones and antibiotics.

Aligning Paleo Powders with Your Workout Program

The final consideration to address is the fact that exercise and nutrition go hand in hand. Exercise experts find that the amount of protein and carbohydrates the body needs varies depending on how hard and how much you are training. Carbohydrate intake is especially crucial for endurance athletes who burn through high quantities of fuel with each workout.

This means that when you choose a protein powder, you need to think about how hard you usually work out. People who perform endurance cardio workouts should choose a powder that has a significant amount of carbs, which will help their bodies fuel the exercise. For others, a high carb count could hinder weight loss.

Top Paleo-Friendly Protein Powder

  • BOOSTS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM: This protein powder boosts your immune system with powerful antioxidants and essential vitamins and nutrients to help you heal quickly.
  • IMPROVES HEALTH AT THE CELLULAR LEVEL: Our expertly blended formula contains powerful probiotics, anti-inflammatories, and antioxidants to improve every single aspect of your health at the cellular...

This protein powder is Paleo friendly and is gluten, dairy and egg free which is great for those with specific allergies. The protein source for this powder is beef, chicken, and salmon which is good because these sources are high in amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.

The Perfect Paleo Powder also contains a prebiotic fiber blend which is beneficial to the body because it stimulates the production of good, helpful bacteria in the gut. It also contains flax, kale, blueberry, banana, and other ingredients to help it serve as a multivitamin.

With a high-calorie count (approximately 1,000 calories per serving), this powder would make a great post-workout meal replacement but would be a poor choice for the less active with lower caloric intake needs.

It does use palm sugar as a sweetener, which disqualifies it from some people’s individualized programs. However, palm sugar has a lower glycemic index than table sugar, honey, and even agave and is considered a healthy alternative sweetener.

The product has a long list of ingredients, so people would want to read carefully so that they ensure they avoid their particular sensitivities.

What We Like:
  • Gluten, dairy, and egg free
  • Protein source is high quality: beef, chicken, and salmon (27 grams per serving)
What We Dislike:
  • Palm sugar sweetener
  • Many ingredients

2. Naked Egg

Sale
NAKED EGG – 3LB Non-GMO Egg White Protein Powder from US Farms – Bulk, No Additives, Paleo, Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Soy Free – 25g Protein, 44 Servings
82 Reviews
NAKED EGG – 3LB Non-GMO Egg White Protein Powder from US Farms – Bulk, No Additives, Paleo, Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Soy Free – 25g Protein, 44 Servings
  • ONLY TWO INGREDIENTS: Egg white protein from eggs raised on US farms and sunflower lecithin. Naked Egg contains no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors.
  • PRODUCED ON US FARMS: Our powdered egg whites are sourced exclusively from US farms and are processed in under a day to maintain the highest and most complete amino acid profile.
  • MAXIMUM NUTRITION: 25g of Protein, 2g of Carbs, 110 Calories, and 5.8g of BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) per serving.

The Naked Egg protein powder has an amazingly short list of ingredients, which makes it highly transparent. The only two foods in this powder are eggs that have been raised on US farms, and sunflower lecithin.

Because of the simple ingredient list, you can imagine that the powder has little taste. It is not made to be mixed with water and consumed. Instead, it is ideal for adding to smoothies for a protein boost or used in baking projects to create protein-packed snacks.

Because the protein comes from egg whites that have been processed within a day, the amino acids in this mix are high quality. Egg whites are an extremely lean source of protein, which means that they provide a high protein to calorie ratio.

With each serving of this powder you would get 25 grams of protein, yet only consume 110 calories. Since this powder is best mixed with other ingredients, more calories will likely be added onto that to take in the protein.

What We Like:
  • Only two ingredients
  • 100% Paleo-friendly
  • Farm-raised eggs processed within a day (high amino acid profile)
  • No added sweeteners
What We Dislike:
  • No flavor; must be mixed with other ingredients to taste
  • Minimal vitamins and minerals

3. Julian Bakery Paleo Protein

Paleo Thin Protein Powder (Blueberry Tart) (30 Servings) 2 lbs Monk Fruit Sweetened (Egg White)
1,710 Reviews
Paleo Thin Protein Powder (Blueberry Tart) (30 Servings) 2 lbs Monk Fruit Sweetened (Egg White)
  • Paleo Protein Powder Is Soy Free (Egg Whites) From USA Farms (30 Servings Total)
  • Tart Blueberry Taste- Instantly Mixes In Water (GMO Free) (2 Lbs) IKDiet Phase 1 Compliant
  • Simple Ingredients: Organic Egg White Powder, Blueberry, Probiotics Sunflower Lecithin (381mg Sodium Naturally Occurring)

This powder comes in a fun double chocolate flavor, which makes it great for baking yet has an amazing 0 grams of sugar per serving. This is because the sweet, chocolate flavor is coming from a blend of organic Stevia leaf, cocoa powder, and chocolate and vanilla extracts.

The protein in this powder comes from grass-fed, pasteurized beef. It has 25 grams of protein per serving and only 108 calories per serving. This is a plus for anyone looking for protein without taking in a high amount of calories, for weight loss purposes.

The vitamin and mineral profile of this powder is very minimal. It has a small amount of vitamin A and C, and no iron, calcium, or other minerals. When it is combined with other ingredients, such as berries in a protein smoothie, this could provide the protein and chocolaty flavor that you are looking for. But on its own, it is not a good source of vitamins.

What We Like:
  • High quality beef protein (25 grams per serving)
  • 100% paleo-friendly
  • Gluten and Soy-free
What We Dislike:
  • Minimal vitamins and minerals
  • No probiotics, fiber, or omega-3 fatty acids

Conclusion

The Paleo diet philosophy emphasizes the benefits of eating whole foods that have been minimally processed. With that said, sometimes a protein powder is the best option for meeting your nutritional needs, even when on the paleo diet.

When you don’t have time to grill a piece of chicken and veggies, it is far better to grab a protein smoothie on the go than to resort to stopping into a quickie mart for a donut or slice of pizza. The Paleo dieter looks to protein powders to keep them on track with their program while they lead an active life.

To pick the best protein powder we have to balance the convenience of it verses the ingredients list and health benefits. The reviews covered here showed that each powder has strengths and weaknesses.

For the Paleo dieter who needs an occasional on the go meal or post-workout protein punch, the PaleoPro powder is the clear winner. It can be consumed conveniently (no need to put it into a smoothie or baked goods), and it has a simple ingredients list.

When on the Paleo diet, the vast majority of your foods come from whole processed foods. You most likely aren’t looking for fiber, multivitamins, omega-threes, or minerals in your meal replacement, because you meet those needs in other meals.

However, you do need a quick, clean source of protein, and the PaleoPro mix delivers that from a mix of beef and eggs. This mix is best for people who need a convenient protein source on the go, to supplement their otherwise unprocessed meals.

What are the Best CBD Hemp Oils?

What is CBD oil? Is CBD oil and hemp oil the same? These are relatively new products so most people are not informed. Below we'll answer common questions and go over the benefits these oils can provide.

Pain, especially chronic pain, can be difficult to live with. Unfortunately, prescription painkillers have many dangerous side effects. Whether you’re suffering from an on-going condition or temporary muscle soreness, CBD Hemp Oils can be a safe, effective solution.

Our guide to the best CBD hemp oils has everything you need to know about what CBD is and how it works.

What is CBD Hemp Oil?

In order to understand what CBD is, let’s first take a look at marijuana. Marijuana contains over 400 active compounds. Probably the most famous component of marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydroc, also known as THC. (Source)

THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. It’s responsible for altering memory, feelings, perceptions of time and more. Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is the other major component of marijuana. Unlike THC, CBD is a nonpsychoactive agent. This means CBD does not get you high or alter your consciousness. (Source)

What Does CBD Hemp Oil Do?

CBD Hemp Oil has both physical and mental benefits.

Physically, CBD and Hemp Oil help reduce inflammation in the body. Regular use is effective at treating both temporary and chronic inflammation. You can take the oil as needed to reduce muscle soreness following an injury or workout. Taken daily, the oil can also be an effective solution for on-going issues such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and similar painful conditions.

Mentally, CBD oil can help create feelings of calm and relaxation. CBD Hemp Oil also helps stop repetitive thoughts. These soothing effects can also help you fall asleep easier and stay asleep longer. Note that CBD oil doesn’t make most people feel sleepy if they’re up-and-about during the day. The sleep aid properties only occur if you’re ready for bed.

Here’s an instructional video where medical professionals provide additional detail on the benefits of CBD hemp oil:

What’s the Difference between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil

Here’s where things can be a little confusing. CBD Hemp Oil contains the cannabidiol compound. But not all hemp oils contain CBD.

CBD hemp oils are legal in 16 states. Hemp oils without CBD are legal in all 50 states, and have been for about 20 years. You’ll need to check your state laws to determine if CDB hemp oil is legal in your state. (Source)

Most people prefer the stronger healing properties of CBD Hemp Oil. But Hemp Oil without CBD does have plenty of uses. Hemp Oil also promotes muscle and mind relaxation. It’s just not as powerful as CBD Hemp Oil. Understanding the difference is important so you don’t accidentally buy the wrong type of product.

What are the Drawbacks of CBD Hemp Oil?

The medical benefits are clear. However, hemp oil isn’t always a miracle cure. There are two main drawbacks for many customers: taste and price.

Hemp oils naturally taste a bit… unusual. They tend to have a bitter, plant flavor which most people tolerate at best. If you’re concerned about the taste, you’ll want to find a hemp oil which adds some type of masking flavor. Both chocolate and mint are usually pretty effective at covering up the natural hemp taste.

Price is another complication. Hemp oil can be quite expensive. If you’re using the oil occasionally to treat post-workout soreness or other temporary injuries, the cost is usually manageable. But if you need a lot of CBD hemp oil throughout the day to help manage a chronic condition, costs can quickly add up.

There are two ways to potentially manage these costs. First, you might consider switching from CBD hemp oil to hemp oil without CBD. The CBD often results in higher (no pun intended) costs. You might also consider medical marijuana, which is often cheaper than CBD hemp oil. Of course, the intoxicating properties of medical marijuana can be an issue if you need to use it all day long.

Benefits versus Prescription Drugs

Despite potential issues with the taste and the cost, many people have found CBD hemp oil to be an incredibly effective pain management solution. There are numerous benefits over prescription painkillers such as Vicoden and other opioids.

Opioid-based pain relief can cause both short and long-term problems. Constipation, nausea, drowsiness and mood swings are common after just a short period of use. Over time, narcotic pain relievers can cause addiction, liver problems and even overdose! (Source)

CBD hemp oils provide pain relief with none of those side effects. At worst, excessive hemp oil will cause drowsiness. But generally people experience pain relief with no harmful side effects. For many people, regular use of hemp oil actually increases their mood and decreases anxiety.

Conclusion

CBD Hemp Oil isn’t used for fun. Instead, its main purpose is to treat pain. So you want pure, effective CBD hemp oils which work consistently. While all of the hemp oils on the list are effective at treating pain, we recommend the Restorative Botanicals Hemp Oil Extract 600 mg Chocolate Mint Flavor – 2 ounce (60ml).

Like many Hemp Oils on this list, Restorative Botanicals is a Colorado company. Other locations can certainly manufacture quality CBD hemp oils. But Colorado has a long history and lots of experience growing and manufacturing hemp, so we feel confident recommending CBD products from the Rocky Mountains.

Plus, the Restorative Botanicals extract has a delicious chocolate mint flavor. For many people, one of the biggest drawbacks to CBD oil is the plant-like taste. This Restorative Botanicals Oil doesn’t have a taste issue due to the MCT coconut and sunflower seed oils.

The oil is easy to regulate, too. The recommended dose is 30 drops three times a day. You can take less if you want mild pain relief and a bit more if you need a sleep aid or have major pain. Also works as an effective treatment for acid reflux disease.

If you don’t like the taste of hemp oil, but also don’t like the chocolate mint taste of the Restorative Botanicals blend, then we recommend the Populum Premium Hemp Oil Supplement. They use cold-pressed orange oil and other fruit-based oils to mask the hemp taste effectively. The Populum Premium hemp oil is our top runner-up.

CBD Hemp Oils are an often misunderstood solution for pain relief. If you want to avoid the complications of prescription pain relievers and sleep aids, check out how the power of cannabidiol can help you.
